Thoracica (Cirripedia, Maxillipoda) Common name. Acorn Barnacles, Stalked Barnacles, Wart Barnacles. Description. Head. Rostrum absent; eyes absent; eyes naupliar eyes absent. Antennules (antenna 1) uniramous; peduncle and flagellum indistinguishable; exopod reduced, vestigial or absent. Antennae (antenna 2) reduced, vestigial or absent. Mandible uniramous; palp absent. Maxillipeds, absent. Thorax. Carapace present, univalved, enclosing head, body and appendages, forming a thick mantle, of calcareous plates or with spines. Thorax and abdomen differentiated. Peraeopods (legs) 6 pairs; biramous; non-phyllopodous; undifferentiated (simple). Abdomen absent. Uropods vestigial or absent. Telson absent. Larval development. Eggs shed or deposited externally. Habitat. Marine, brackish water; living on hard substrates, plants and animals. Distribution. Worldwide.
